With the enforcement of data privacy laws, tracking user data has become difficult than ever before. You have to ensure that the user data doesn’t consist of personally identifiable information (PII). This is where the user property of Google Analytics 4 (GA4) comes in.
What is user property in GA4 tag?
User property describes the segment of users. These segments could be language preference, location, age, country, device category, interest, language, gender, and so on.
What is user scope?
Client ID serves as a unique identifier to identify distinct users on a website.
In user scoped dimension, the value is calculated and sent once per user.
Let us see a use case of user scoped dimension. For example, you want to track the number of users who have subscribed to your newsletter. In this case, you would want to track the number of unique subscribers even if some have subscribed for the newsletter more than once. This is where user scoped dimension is used.
How to create a user property in Google Analytics 4?
To create a user property in GA4 is very simple. All you need to do is follow the 4 steps given below.
Step 1:
On the left navigation panel, click on Configure.

Step 2:
On the left navigation panel, click on Custom Definitions.

Step 3:
Click on Create custom dimensions button on the top-right corner.

Step 4:
Create user scope custom dimension and click on Save button on the top-right corner.

In the above example, the user property created is ' Client_ID'. This must tally with the property name which can be found under user property in Google Tag Manager’s tag.
Best practices to manage a user property in GA4
- You can define up to 25 user properties in one property.
- The character limit of ‘User property name’ is 24 characters. On exceeding this limit, GA4 throws an error code 6.
- The character limit of ‘User property value’ is 36 characters. On exceeding this limit, GA4 throws an error code 7.
